Cowboys Beat Redskins The Dallas Cowboys defeated the Washington Redskins, 21-10, yesterday to move into a first-place tie with the Redskins in the NFC East. Emmitt Smith bounced back from one of the worst games of his career by rushing for 155 yards and scoring all three Dallas touchdowns. Smith, who was held to 18 yards on 11 carries in Sunday's 20-6 loss to the New York Giants, did not practice Monday or Tuesday and his status for this game was questionable. But he got the start and showed no signs of his ankle injury. Cowboys coach Barry Switzer says he hopes yesterday's performance puts to rest the question of what Emmitt can do. Chiefs Tame Lions Marcus Allen's one-yard scoring dive with 46 seconds remaining lifted the Kansas City Chiefs to a 28-24 victory yesterday over the Detroit Lions. Allen, who handled the ball 15 times for 73 yards, broke a tie with Walter Payton (110) and became the NFL's all-time rushing touchdown leader 11:11 into the game with a one-yard TD plunge. Kansas City quarterback Rich Gannon successfully made his first start since 1993, completing 15-of-18 passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns. The Chiefs have won four of their last five games and crept within 2 1/2 games of Denver for first place in the AFC West. The Lions have lost six of their last seven games and dropped out of playoff contention. Pacers Trounce Kings Reggie Miller scored 10 of his 19 points in the first quarter to lead the Indiana Pacers to their second home win of the season last night. The Pacers defeated the Sacramento Kings, 101-83. Duane Ferrell added 15 points and Dale Davis had 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Pacers, who improved to 2-4 at home. Mitch Richmond scored 18 points to lead the Kings. In the only other NBA game last night, the Golden State Warriors rallied for a 124-to-118 victory over the visiting New Jersey Nets. Golden State's Joe Smith score 30 points, including an 11-foot jumper with less than three minutes remaining in the game to put the Warriors ahead. Flames Blank Kings Rookie Dwayne Roloson made 22 saves to earn his first NHL win and Jonas Hoglund and Theoren Fleury scored as the Calgary Flames blanked the Los Angeles Kings, 2-0, last night at Calgary. Roloson made two saves in the first period, nine in the second and 11 in the third to post his first NHL shutout in his third career start. Roloson became the Flames' backup goaltender when Rick Tabaracci was traded to Tampa Bay 10 days ago. In the only other NHL match last night, the Phoenix Coyotes edged the New Jersey Devils, 4-3, in overtime. Kentucky Routs Syracuse Eighth-ranked Kentucky handed number 11 Syracuse its worst loss under coach Jim Boeheim in the opening round of the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage last night. Kentucky's Derek Anderson scored a career-high 25 points to lead the Wildcats to an 87-53 victory over the Orangemen. The 34-point loss was the worst in Boeheim's 21 seasons at Syracuse. Syracuse (1-1) could not handle Kentucky's pressure in the first half, committing 13 turnovers that helped the Wildcats (1-1) open a 49-27 halftime lead. Last night's meeting was the first for the two schools since Kentucky defeated the Orangemen last April to win the national championship. Duke-Indiana in NIT Finals No. 5 Duke and No. 17 Indiana square off tonight in the championship game of the pre-season National Invitation Tournament at New York's Madison Square Garden. The championship game will pit Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski against his mentor, Indiana's Bob Knight. Duke advanced to the championship Wednesday night after beating No. 21 Tulsa, 72-67 in the semifinals. The Hoosiers advanced with a dramatic 74-73 win over intrastate rival Evansville. Agassi to Skip Australian Open Andre Agassi has decided he needs a break from tennis. The American tennis star will not compete in the Australian Open, which begins on Jan. 13. The director of the grand slam event says Agassi has decided to sit this one out because he feels he needs some time off from the game. Tennis officials say Agassi will probably drop out of the top 10 after missing the Australian Open. He's currently ranked eighth in the world. Last week Agassi withdrew midway through the World Championship in Hanover, Germany with a stomach upset and cold. He was booed off the court after his straight sets loss to Pete Sampras in the opening match of the tournament. Rain Suspends Golf in S. Africa Weather permitting, first round play of the Million Dollar Challenge will resume today in Sun City, South Africa. Rain forced suspension of play yesterday after just 1 1/2 hours in the first round. Some of the greens had become unplayable, according to tournament referee Dennis Bruyns, while most of the saturated bunkers on the course were "unfair." German Bernhard Langer, the winner in 1985 and 1991, set the early pace in the persistent drizzle with American Steve Stricker and four-times European No.1 Colin Montgomerie of Britain. Lightning Put Shaw on IR The Tampa Bay Lightning have placed veteran defenseman David Shaw on the injured reserve list due to a left knee sprain. Shaw, who incurred the injury in Wednesday night's 3-0 loss to Buffalo, has totaled seven assists and 16 penalty minutes in 19 games this season. The 32-year-old Shaw has played in over 700 NHL games over 15 seasons with Quebec, the New York Rangers, Edmonton, Minnesota, Boston and Tampa Bay. Kings Acquire Smyth The Los Angeles Kings have bolstered their frontline by acquiring right wing Brad Smyth from the Florida Panthers for a 1997 third-round draft choice. The 23-year-old Smyth has appeared in just eight games this season, recording one goal, 10 shots and two penalty minutes. He also played in seven contests with the team last year, collecting a goal and an assist with four penalty minutes.
